If you told me three years ago, freshly graduated and starry-eyed about just how glamorous strutting around a magazine HQ would be, that I’d one day be sitting here writing about how good a pair of track pants are — specifically for the office floor — I’d have laughed in your face. Yet, here we are.

Having once thought denim was already pushing it for the 9-to-5, it took a particularly stylish colleague to convince me that dressing for the office doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort. Turns out, you can have both. But not without getting the balance right. In my eyes, adidas’ Firebird pants are that fine line.

The beauty of the Firebirds is the fact that they paved the way for this genre of smart-casual workwear. Granted, they weren’t designed to be worn in boardrooms, but they’ve most definitely, quietly earned their seat at the table.

I’m particularly drawn to this pleated double navy pair. One of the safer colorways? Most definitely. But also arguably the easiest to style, minus the whole navy-and-black conundrum.

Paired here with a simple blue Oxford button-down and some tonal adidas x Wales Bonner sneaks, and you’ve got yourself a fit good ol' Human Resources can’t pull you up on. They have enough structure to feel considered, but you still get that easy, relaxed fit you’d usually associate with your off-duty wardrobe. Basically, they’re doing the job of a smarter pant without asking you to give up the comfort of a track pair. And for a full day at the office, that’s a trade-off I’m more than happy to make again and again.

I think the key is not treating them like a novelty. Style them with the same instinct you’d apply to any other trouser and they slot in surprisingly easily. For me, that means a good shirt, a decent pair of shoes, and knowing when to leave the rest alone. The Firebirds can handle the rest. My colleague is a testament to that.
